Mike Macdonald is stripping away the championship glow, challenging a revamped roster to forget past glory and embrace a gritty, new identity for the upcoming title defense.

One of the toughest things to do when you've just climbed the Super Bowl mountain is to put it to the back of your mind as the new offseason begins, and the Seattle Seahawks have done their best ot do just that.

Coming into the new year as the hunted, not the hunter, the Seahawks have been cognizant that they will get everyone's best shot, but also that last year was last year. It doesn't help them now.

Head coach Mike Macdonald has spoken of leaving last year in the rearview mirror, and to the players' credit, all have done that as the offseason has begun. It's a new chapter in Seattle's story.

Yes, the Super Bowl win was great, but now it's time to push it to the back of the mind and focus on the task at hand: preparing for the title defense.

And Macdonald, speaking as training camp got underway, praised his side for their approach.

“Guys have been awesome, they've really done a great job of setting the mindset,” Macdonald said. “I think it's one of those things like we put emphasis on it, but we're not extra here. We're just kind of is what it is. We just tell each other the way we want to do things, then we go attack it."

With some roster changes, which included losing star back and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker to the Kansas City Chiefs, the roster will look a little different.

So too the coaching staff as Klint Kubiak is now with the Las Vegas Raiders as their head coach, and Brian Fleury is now the new offensive coordinator.

For some, that is a big change and one that leaves some question marks over Seattle and its ability to defend its title.

But as Macdonald explains, nearly everything is different about the team if you really think about it.

“If you just boil it down to the lowest common denominator, I'm different than I was this time of last year, I'm different than I was at the end of the season," Macdonald added. "We got I don't know 30 percent of our roster is probably different.

"Changes that our coaching staff, got guys with new perspectives and a lot of life things that have happened. So we're all kind of new people here in this situation, which by definition makes us a new team too."

So, this "new" Seahawks team has gotten its preparations underway as it looks to give itself the best chance to repeat as champs.

And leaving last year's success behind is the first step, because it won't help you win games; if anything, holding onto what transpired last season will do the opposite.

Going by Macdonald's words, the Seahawks roster has done a good job of moving forward and beginning the offseason and taking it for what it is -- a new chapter.
