Talented Tulane QB Jake Retzlaff chases his NFL dream, seizing a low-risk, high-reward chance with the Seahawks after a challenging journey.
The Seattle Seahawks are continuing to build out their roster in the aftermath of the draft, and that process often includes taking chances on overlooked talent.
One of the more intriguing opportunities this offseason comes in the form of a rookie minicamp invite extended to quarterback Jake Retzlaff—a player whose path to this point has been anything but typical.
Retzlaff, who most recently played at Tulane, will get a chance to compete for a roster spot during Seattle’s rookie minicamp. These invites are often low-risk, high-reward opportunities for teams, allowing them to evaluate talent up close while giving players a chance to prove they belong at the next level.
For Retzlaff, it’s a critical step toward keeping his NFL hopes alive.
His journey, however, hasn’t been without challenges. Retzlaff began his college career at BYU, where he was part of a successful team before off-field issues led to a suspension and eventual transfer. The situation included sexual assault allegations that were eventually dismissed, but the fallout prompted him to move on and continue his career elsewhere.
At Tulane, Retzlaff worked to rebuild both his reputation and his game. While he may not have been among the most high-profile quarterbacks in this year’s draft class, his experience and resilience have kept him on the radar.
He racked up 3,168 yards and 15 passing touchdowns, while also bringing his interceptions numbers down to seven from 12 the previous season. Retzlaff was also able to get it done with his legs with 634 yards and an impressive 16 touchdowns on the ground.
Seattle’s approach to the post-draft period has long emphasized competition. Rookie minicamp serves as an early proving ground, where invitees can earn contracts or at least generate interest from other teams. For players like Retzlaff, every rep matters, and a strong showing could quickly change the trajectory of his career.
While many eyes are on the team’s draft picks, these under-the-radar additions often provide some of the most compelling storylines.
As minicamp approaches, Retzlaff’s opportunity stands out as one to watch. It’s a chance for a fresh start, and for Seattle, another potential piece in the ongoing effort to build depth and competition across the roster.
