The defending champions drew a massive Wednesday night audience for their Super Bowl rematch, outperforming historic precedents and solidifying Seattle's status as a premier national draw.
The Seattle Seahawks spent last season forcing their way back into the center of the NFL. Their first game as defending champions suggested plenty of people were interested in seeing what came next.
Seattle opened the 2026 season with a 13-10 win over the New England Patriots, drawing an average audience of 25.1 million viewers across NBC and Peacock.
The Wednesday night opener doubled as a Super Bowl LX rematch, seven months after Seattle beat New England 29-13 to capture the franchise’s second Lombardi Trophy.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reported Monday that the matchup marked the fourth straight season in which the NFL’s opening game topped 25 million viewers, matching another four-year run from 2013 through 2016.
There is some context needed with that number.
Seattle-New England came in below the 28.3 million viewers who watched the Philadelphia Eagles host the Dallas Cowboys in last season’s opener. This year’s game was also the league’s least-watched opener since 2022.
Then there is the scheduling wrinkle … this one happened on a Wednesday.
The NFL traditionally opens its season Thursday night, and Patriots-Seahawks was only the second Wednesday NFL Kickoff Game. The other came in 2012, when the defending Super Bowl champion New York Giants hosted the Cowboys.
That game averaged 23.9 million viewers.
Seattle and New England topped it by roughly 5%.
That does not erase the drop from last season’s Cowboys-Eagles audience, but it changes the comparison. There simply is not much modern precedent for stacking a Wednesday opener against the NFL’s usual Thursday night showcase — especially when the only real comparison came 14 years ago.
The audience also reached an even larger peak during the game.
NBC Sports announced that viewership peaked at 27.4 million during the second quarter. Its coverage also averaged 10 million viewers among adults ages 18-49, its largest NFL Kickoff Game audience in the demographic since 2021.
So, no, Seattle-New England did not match the massive audience Cowboys-Eagles delivered a year ago.
A Wednesday night game still clearing 25 million viewers, beating the only comparable Wednesday opener and producing NBC Sports’ strongest Kickoff Game performance in the key demographic in five years gives the number a different look.
Seattle won the Super Bowl in February and immediately inherited everything that comes with defending it — expectations, scrutiny and a much brighter spotlight.
The Seahawks opened that defense with an average audience north of 25 million … and that is hardly a quiet return.
