As third-down failures and a stagnant run game haunt Seattle, legendary cornerback Richard Sherman preaches patience while urging the newly reinforced offensive line to find its rhythm.
Maybe the Seattle Seahawks need more weapons.
Or maybe, as a patient Richard Sherman suggests, the defending Super Bowl champions just need more time.
After being dominated by the Chicago Bears, 34-17, in a Week 8 loss on Monday night, some Seahawks watchers are sounding the alarm.
A pinpointed concern? Iheir inability to convert on third down.
In the loss to Chicago, the Seattle offense went an absurd 1-for-11 on third downs as they couldn’t extend drives when needed.
As a result, former Seahawks cornerback Sherman is speaking out on that problem ...
With some level of patience.
“The problem started offensively on third down,” Sherman said on “The Richard Sherman Podcast” YouTube channel. “Third down has been a problem for this team and continues to be a problem … ''
But, he continued, "The things that are fixable offensively, they have to get this run game fixed.''
Does the problem have to do with the offensive line, which allowed three sacks in this game?
Seattle just executed a trade with the Colts to bring in All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson, which Sherman obviously views as a major part of the solution to the problem.
“I know people may feel like, ‘Oh, Quenton Nelson, man, he’s not worth the money,'' Sherman said, "(but) “offensive linemen take a second to blossom and gel and do all that.
“I do think they’re going to be fine. The run game is still stagnant, not getting enough out of it.”
Full health in the running backs room might help there. ... but it's true; the Seahawks’ running game was nonexistent in this loss to the Bears, as Seattle only recorded 81 total rushing yards.
It can also be argued that Seattle needs to pursue another trade to add to the wide receivers room, which is being carried by superstar Jaxon Smith-Njigba. (Maybe they should get the Colts back on speed dial to pursue a trade for Josh Downs?)
Or, maybe there is already some help in place ... with the need for a step-up there.
“Eventually, defenses are going to catch on to what this team is doing, and they’re going to need help from other guys,” Sherman said. “They’re going to need Cooper Kupp to get involved. ... They’re going to need the tight ends…
“They’re going to need other guys to step up. But the run game has to get going. They have to be better on first and second down if they’re ever going to have the success they want to have with this offense.''
