Erratic play and rising turnovers have Seattle searching for rhythm. Mike Macdonald demands immediate consistency as a brutal midseason stretch looms, starting with a pivotal showdown in Denver.
The Seattle Seahawks' offense under Brian Fleury through the first five weeks has been a little inconsistent, to say the least.
Granted, some of that can be attributed to not having Sam Darnold for every game, but even in the ones he's played in, Sam hasn't been consistent, with interceptions starting to pile up.
While Seattle has scored at least 29 points in four of its five games, the unit as a whole hasn't been a smooth operation.
Penalties have crept into their game; the rushing attack has been up and down, and the passing game has been like a yo-yo, too.
Yet, Seattle is at 3-2 and in a decent enough spot this early in the season.
But for head coach Mike Macdonald, there is urgency to get the offense playing consistently well.
"We expect to grow in all three phases," Macdonald said. "There's a sense of urgency to go. Sometimes you grow best by kind of doubling down on your core competencies and the things you believe in. I think that's something we want to focus on is making sure that we're all aligned in all the things from from players to coaches, how we want to play, how we want to execute and what's expected of us.
"We're growing on defense, on special teams. I think you saw our special teams take a jump [vs. 49ers]. So, offense is right there with it, but there's a sense of urgency to get going."
It won't be easy to get this thing up and running the way Seattle hopes, given their tight schedule.
After the road game against the Denver Broncos, the Seahawks face the Kansas City Chiefs, Chicago Bears, the 49ers again, the Dallas Cowboys, and then two games against the Los Angeles Rams.
But this group has been there and done it before, so they will know what it takes.
Darnold, along with Jaxon Smith-Njigba, the run game, which should be boosted by Zach Charbonnet and Jadarian Price in the next few weeks, plus receivers in Cooper Kupp, Rashid Shaheed, and Tory Horton, there is enough talent to get this thing rolling.
But we are already five games down, and the Seahawks can't afford another five-week stretch where they are still figuring this thing out.
So yeah, there's urgency to get it done as soon as possible.
