The Seattle Seahawks were thought to fill their offensive coordinator vacancy from within Mike Macdonald's Super Bowl-winning staff.
And while Seattle did target someone who, like Macdonald, comes from the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree, the hire comes directly from Shanahan's staff, the San Francisco 49ers.
Reports indicate that the Seahawks are expected to hire 49ers tight ends coach and run-game coordinator Brian Fleury to be the team's new offensive coordinator, succeeding the newly-hired Las Vegas Raiders head coach Klint Kubiak.
Seattle had reportedly interviewed several in-house candidates, including run-game coordinator Justin Outten and pass-game coordinator Jake Peetz, but ultimately landed Fleury, who jumps to another team in the NFC West.
Another internal candidate, quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, has now joined Kubiak's staff in Las Vegas as the Raiders offensive coordinator after not getting the Seattle job.
As NFL.com recalls, "Fleury has been with San Francisco for seven seasons, beginning as a defensive quality control coach in 2019. He switched over to the same role on offense from 2020-21 before rising to TEs coach from 2022-24.
"The 2025 campaign saw him add the title of run game coordinator. Prior to his time with the 49ers, the former college quarterback also worked for the Miami Dolphins as a football research analyst in 2016 and director of football research from 2017-18. He coached on staffs for the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills before that."
Fleury has helped Shanahan's offense prioritize superstar tight end George Kittle, who could miss a large chunk of the 2026 season after tearing his Achilles in the postseason.
After inheriting run-game duties in 2025, Fleury guided 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey's return from injury to rush for 1,202 yards on the way to Comeback Player of the Year and First Team All-Pro honors.
Fleury now turns his attention to another comeback kid in quarterback Sam Darnold and workhorse running back Kenneth Walker III. ESPN's Brady Henderson says, "although [Macdonald] didn't promote from within as he initially thought he would, quarterback Sam Darnold and the rest of Seattle's offense shouldn't have to start over entirely in 2026. The 49ers run a version of the West Coast offense that Kubiak -- who spent the 2023 season in San Francisco -- ran in Seattle."
San Francisco gave Seattle two of its closest games of the regular season, in Week 1 and Week 17. The first meeting, a 17-13 win for the 49ers at Lumen Field, saw Kittle catch a touchdown and McCaffrey total 142 yards from scrimmage.
The Seahawks responded on the road, nearly shutting out the Niners 13-3 to end the regular season and seal the NFC's No. 1 seed.
The historic postseason run that followed ended with Seattle hoisting its second Vince Lombardi Trophy at Levi's Stadium in the Bay Area.
As the quest for a repeat begins, they've taken a valuable member of the 49ers' staff with them on the trip back to the Pacific Northwest.
