As the Seahawks are set to begin their offseason program, Akers, now has to find a new team.
The NFL Draft is now behind the Seattle Seahawks, and head coach Mike Macdonald, along with general manager John Schneider, can work toward building their 90-man roster for the offseason.
This time of year is often celebrated by young players beginning their NFL careers, but for some veterans, it is a part of the offseason they dread.
With teams chopping and changing their roster ahead of the offseason program, some players who thought they might have a place on a roster suddenly don't.
And one Seattle player is now going through that, with Cam Akers being released by the Super Bowl champions.
And Seahawks team writer John Boyle updated the fans on the Akers situation.
"The move frees up a roster space following a draft in which the Seahawks added eight players, meaning Seattle now has 82 players on their roster not including undrafted rookie free agents, who will sign prior to the start of this week's rookie minicamp," Boyle wrote.
"With Akers no longer on the team, the Seahawks currently have six running backs on the roster, returning players Zach Charbonnet, George Holani, Kenny McIntosh, Jacardia Wright; free-agent addition Emanuel Wilson, and first-round pick Jadarian Price."
So, the Seahawks clearly felt they had enough running backs on the roster to take into the offseason.
Of course, Zach Charbonnet won't take part in any of the practices, at least initially, as he recovers from an ACL injury suffered last season.
But for everyone else? It's a chance to stake their claim in Brian Fleury's offense.
First-round pick Jadarian Price is the one who I think has the most to gain this offseason. There's a starting role there for him, if he's good enough.
Plus, George Holani, Kenny McIntosh, and Emanuel Wilson will be the others vying for snaps in what is looming as a hotly contested position battle.
And unfortunately for Akers, he won't be a part of it, as he is now on the lookout for a new team.
A two-time Super Bowl champion who has six years of experience in the league, along with 2,044 yards and 13 TDs, he could be of value to someone looking to bolster their running back stocks.
Seattle felt comfortable moving on from him, which says a lot, and Akers will have to patiently wait for his next NFL opportunity.
