Seattle needs a little extra insurance at edge, so why not add the veteran free agent?
This offseason, the Seattle Seahawks have seen some key starters and rotational pieces leave in free agency, and the franchise has not exactly replaced them like for like.
Granted, Seattle's roster is better constructed than most, but some feel the defense, which was the driving force behind the Super Bowl win, could use some reinforcements, especially on the edge.
DeMarcus Lawrence, Dante Fowler Jr. and Jared Ivey loom as the top three on the depth chart for the Seahawks and Mike Macdonald, and all bring a veteran presence to the edge rushing room.
But is that enough?
Do the Seahawks need another edge rusher to rotate through during games? In truth, you can never have enough, and it is here where CBS Sports' Zachary Pereles has a good idea of who Seattle could look to add.
Free agent Jadeveon Clowney.
"Clowney spent 2019 in the Emerald City, but this would be more about reuniting with Mike Macdonald, who was Baltimore's defensive coordinator when Clowney had 9.5 sacks for the Ravens in 2023," Pereles wrote. "Seattle just won a Super Bowl, leaning heavily on a ton of EDGE depth."
Clowney is coming off a decent enough season in Dallas, posting 8.5 sacks, 12 TFLs, and 10 quarterback hits while playing 44 percent of the snaps under Matt Eberflus.
So that is one reason. Jadeveon still has juice in the tank. But the other is what Pereles alluded to, and that's a reunion with Mike Macdonald.
Clowney only had one season with Macdonald in Baltimore, but it was a good one, and it remains one of the better seasons of his entire career.
Posting 9.5 sacks (joint career high), 19 quarterback hits, and 11 TFLs, Clowney was very productive under Macdonald. Plus, he knows the system and the verbiage, which would make a transition into Seattle's defense a little easier.
Money is a factor, with Clowney signing a one-year, $3.4 million deal with the Cowboys last season, so something similar might be enough to entice the veteran edge to come to the NFC West.
Likely a long shot, as there is a reason Clowney is still a free agent as training camp approaches, but if Seattle wants a little extra juice and depth, Jadeveon could be a nice addition to the defense.
