The Pittsburgh Steelers made an offseason bet that Aaron Rodgers still had one more good year remaining in him, and it seemed like a worthwhile gamble until Sunday night.
The 41-year-old quarterback easily had his worst game of his first season with the Steelers in a 25-10 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif. The four-time NFL MVP completed just 16 of 31 passes for 161 yards and one touchdown with two interceptions while also being sacked for a safety.
Rodgers' 50.6 passer rating was his lowest of the season, and his yardage total was his second lowest. Rodgers threw for just 139 yards against the New England Patriots on Sept. 21, but the Steelers won that game 21-14.
The Steelers didn't score a touchdown until Roman Wilson caught a 27-yard pass from Rodgers with 2:57 remaining. By then, the outcome was no longer in doubt as the touchdown capped the scoring.
The Steelers (5-4) lost for the third time in four games. All three losses have been in primetime, to the Cincinnati Bengals on a Thursday night and the Green Bay Packers and Chargers on Sunday nights. The Steelers' lead in the NFC North is down to one game over the Baltimore Ravens (4-5).
Running back Jaylen Warren was a bright spot for the Steelers' offense with 70 yards rushing on 14 carries. However, the Steelers managed just 221 total yards, were dismal on third down, converting only 2 of 11, and had three turnovers.
The Steelers took a 3-0 lead on Chris Boswell's 59-yard field goal with 10 ½ minutes left in the first quarter. The Chargers (7-3) then scored 25 points in a row, as the Steelers had no answer on offense until the late touchdown.
The Steelers took advantage of the Chargers' injury-depleted offensive line, sacking Justin Herbert five times as he completed 20 of 33 passes for 223 yards and one touchdown. Outside linebacker Alex Highsmith had two sacks, and inside linebacker Patrick Queen registered a team-high 10 tackles. However, the Steelers did not have any takeaways after forcing six the previous week in a win over the Indianapolis Colts.
The Steelers host the Bengals (3-6) next Sunday at Acrisure Stadium.
