First is getting clearance from the Pittsburgh Steelers' medical staff to play after sustaining a minor fracture in his left wrist last Sunday in a win over the Cincinnati Bengals at Acrisure Stadium. Second, even though he throws right-handed, Rodgers needs to be assured that his left wrist is protected with a brace in case he gets sacked.
A big issue for Rodgers could be taking snaps from center, which would cause more stress on the wrist than taking snaps from the shotgun formation. Rodgers likely won't practice until Friday, so he is taking a wait-and-see approach.
Taking snaps from the center would be ideal for the Steelers, allowing them to run effectively. They can't rely on the 41-year-old Rodgers playing like he did while winning four NFL MVP awards for the Green Bay Packers between 2011 and 2021.
"There've been times in my career where we have adjusted and gone to some pistol sets if we need to still keep the spacing on the run distribution between the halfback and quarterback," said Rodgers in his 21st NFL season. "But the goal would be to take snaps from under center."
Rodgers said he was injured on a second-and-7 pass with 17 seconds remaining in the second quarter on Sunday. Rodgers stayed in for one more play and threw an incompletion before Chris Boswell kicked a 25-yard field goal to give the Steelers a 10-6 lead. They pulled away in the second half with backup quarterback Mason Rudolph throwing one touchdown pass and the defense scoring two TDs.
"I was in a lot of pain," Rodgers said." We were late in the play clock, called timeout, came over, felt like I could go one more play, then went in (the locker room), got it checked out."
Rodgers will be playing a familiar opponent in the Bears, longtime rivals of the Packers in the NFC North. He has made 30 career starts against the Bears, going 25-5, and has an affinity for playing at Soldier Field.
"There's incentive for every opponent," Rodgers said. "But I have enjoyed many a Sunday, and Monday, and Thursday in that city. It's a great sports town with phenomenal sports fans, and great place to play."
