Anthony Weaver has something that distinguishes him from the other eight reported candidates for the Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coaching vacancy. He played in the NFL.
Weaver was a defensive end for seven seasons with the Baltimore Ravens (2002-05) and Houston Texans (2006-08). He played in 103 games and started in 98 after the Ravens drafted him in the second round from Notre Dame.
Weaver, 45, spent the last two seasons as the Miami Dolphins’ defensive coordinator. However, Weaver is unemployed after the Dolphins fired coach Mike McDaniel earlier this month. Weaver has interviewed with the Arizona Cardinals and Ravens for their open head coaching positions.
Pittsburgh has scheduled a second interview with Weaver.
The Steelers are looking for a coach after Mike Tomlin resigned last week following 19 seasons. Others in the running to replace Tomlin are Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula and pass game coordinator Nate Scheelhaase, Los Angeles Chargers defensive coordinator Jesse Minter, Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley, Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores, San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Klay Kubiak, former Packers and Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy, and Carolina Panthers defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero.
The Dolphins’ defense struggled this season, ranking 22nd in the NFL in total defense and 24th in scoring defense. Miami had a 7-10 record. A year earlier, the Dolphins were fourth in yards allowed and 10th in points given up.
Weaver began his coaching career in 2010, spending one season each as a graduate assistant at Florida and as North Texas’ linebacker coach. He has been an assistant coach in the NFL for 14 years, with the New York Jets (2012), Buffalo Bills (2013), Cleveland Browns (2015), Texans (2016-20), Ravens (2021-23), and Dolphins (2024-25). Weaver was the Texans’ defensive coordinator in 2020.
Weaver had 265 tackles during playing career, including 208 solo stops and 34 for loss. He also had 15 ½ sacks, five forced fumbles, and three interceptions. Weaver appeared in only one playoff game, which was with the Ravens in 2003.
A native of Abilene, Texas, Weaver grew up in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and is a member of the Saratoga High Blue Streaks Hall of Fame.
