When the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Drew Allar in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft, there was reason to believe that he was going to come in and have a lot to work on.
As we've seen throughout the three preseason games Allar played, there have been some very promising moments and some very questionable ones. At the end of the day, this is exactly what the Steelers expected of a player of his caliber. Allar has a chance to be a future quarterback in this league for a very long time, or he could be out of it in a couple of years.
He's a very polarizing player in terms of his production at times.
Among the other positives, however, is the fact that the Steelers have put the right guys around him.
With Aaron Rodgers and Mike McCarthy giving him chances to learn this offense, Allar feels very confident in what he's supposed to do. He gave a lot of credit to the coaches and teammates for putting him in positions to succeed in these games.
"On the field, the biggest thing is, I feel really confident in the offense, in terms of how to operate it as a quarterback, not second-guessing myself when I'm out there," Allar said, per a video posted by the team on X/Twitter.
"The coaches do a great job of preparing us for these games, because I know it's not like that everywhere," Allar said. "Like, you kind of get the game plan last minute, but the coaching staff has been great with that, and being very detailed with the game plan, making it easy on whoever's out there just to go out and play fast and execute."
The McCarthy aspect might be the biggest of the bunch, as crazy as that might sound because he's literally working under a future Hall of Famer in Rodgers and arguably one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time.
However, McCarthy is a quarterback guru, and that's exactly what Allar needs. He's in a much different situation than he was in college at Penn State under James Franklin, so I'm excited to see what he works with and how things look in the future.
