Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown was released from jail Thursday morning after entering a not guilty plea and posting a $25,000 bond. He is also wearing a GPS ankle monitor as part of an Order issued by Miami-Dade County Circuit Court Judge Mindy Glazer on Wednesday.
Brown was extradited from Dubai and brought to Miami to face charges of attempted second-degree murder. According to published reports, Brown is accused of grabbing a handgun from a security officer after a celebrity boxing match in Miami on May 16. It was alleged in the arrest report that Brown fired a gun at an individual he had a fistfight with earlier.
According to the arrest warrant. Zul-Qarnain Kwame Nantambu told investigators that one of the bullets grazed his neck.
Prosecutors argued for pretrial detention, contending that the former Steelers star has plenty of money and resources to flee and not appear at future hearings or trial.
Eiglarsh argued that Brown had his own handgun on his person and that there were no shots fired at anyone.
The judge did not side with the prosecution and bond was granted.
Brown posted details about the alleged incident immediately after the altercation on social media where he acknowledged the fight, but denied doing anything else. He was temporarily detained by law enforcement, but released shortly thereafter.
His personal attorney Mark Eiglarsh told Glazer Wednesday that Brown, who no longer has a passport, would return to his home in Broward County, Florida. His family lives in South Florida and he has significant ties to the community.
"God is great," Brown told reporters as he left the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center in West Miami. He said this while grabbing a snack at a food truck outside of the jail in West Miami.
Eiglarsh told the Associated Press Tuesday that Brown did nothing wrong. All he did was in self-defense.
“The actions he was forced to take were solely in self-defense against the alleged victim’s violent behavior," Eiglarsh said. "Brown was attacked that night and acted within his legal right to protect himself."
Brown spent 12 years in the NFL before retiring with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brown had 928 receptions for more than 12,000 yards and 88 touchdowns, receiving, on special teams and passing.
