The Pittsburgh Steelers hired former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy to be their new coach after Mike Tomlin stepped down from his post.
McCarthy coached Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay and the two won a Super Bowl together. However, Rodgers and McCarthy reportedly had a falling out before McCarthy was fired in 2018.
With McCarthy in the fold, does that mean Rodgers won't be back on the Steelers if he doesn't retire from the NFL?
According to NFL insider Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, no.
"Speaking of Rodgers, he has emerged from the 2025 season refreshed. One source I spoke to said Rodgers is in a much better place coming out of his year with the Steelers compared with his previous two years with the Jets. He greatly valued his experience in Pittsburgh, and teammates raved about him, both publicly and in exit meetings with the team. The Steelers have been open to a Rodgers return since early in the season, and I don't sense that has changed. The Steelers' combination of head coach Mike McCarthy and offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio makes the transition seamless."
A future Hall of Famer, Rodgers finished with 3,322 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns and seven interceptions this season. He completed 65.7% of his passes.
If Rodgers retires from the NFL, he will finish his pro career with 66,274 passing yards and 527 passing touchdowns. The future Hall of Famer has played for the Packers, New York Jets and Steelers.
Rodgers won his lone Super Bowl during the 2010 season. Ironically, the Packers beat the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.
Rodgers hasn't gotten back to the Super Bowl since then.
It will be fascinating to see what Rodgers decides to do this offseason. If he doesn't retire, the Steelers will push hard to re-sign him.
