The Pittsburgh Steelers need to lock up Joey Porter Jr.
NFL analyst Moe Moton of Bleacher Report has named Joey Porter Jr. the Pittsburgh Steelers' most important contract extension ahead of next season.
Porter Jr. is entering his fourth season with the Steelers.
"Entering the final year of his deal, Porter should be one of the highest-paid cornerbacks before Week 1 of the upcoming term," Moton wrote.
In 14 games for the Steelers last season, Porter Jr. had one interception, 14 passes defended, one sack and 35 solo tackles.
Porter Jr. has a base salary of $3,924,000 and a cap hit of $4,922,790 next season. If the Steelers don't sign Porter Jr. to an extension, the talented defender will hit free agency next season.
Porter Jr. said at the start of June that he believes he should be compensated as one of the league's elite corners.
"Definitely," Porter Jr. said. "I feel like I've been an elite guy since I've been in this league, and I'm happy that I'm getting the respect that I feel like I'm owed."
It's a new era in Pittsburgh, as Mike Tomlin is no longer coaching the Steelers. He stepped down from his post and former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy was hired.
"It's a new start, it's a new beginning," Porter Jr. said. "We got new coaches, we got new players coming in and I just want to be around the guys as much as possible and just to help as much as I can right now. I got all my attention towards that and just trying to try to get better."
The Steelers open the 2026 season against the Atlanta Falcons at home. Let's see if Porter Jr. gets a new deal before then.
