Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy gave a new update on the ongoing injury to cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to squeak out of Week 1 with a win over the Atlanta Falcons, despite the team not playing very well.
The offense once again struggled, giving some concern that dates back to last season. But again, the calling card was the defense, who made the big plays when it mattered most.
However, Pittsburgh was without star cornerback Joey Porter Jr., who missed the game due to an ongoing back injury. Porter has also been dealing with contract talks with the Steelers, that haven't gone too well.
There have been trade rumors around Porter, but so far, Pittsburgh has held off on making any moves. Porter wants to be paid like the top defensive player that he is, and Pittsburgh could be making a mistake by not engaging with him.
But heading into Week 2 of the season against the New England Patriots, Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy gave a new update on whether Porter would take the field. McCarthy didn't have much of an update, other than to say that the star would "do more" this week.
If Porter misses the game against the Patriots, it could create even more tension between the two sides. Porter is one of the better defensive players that the Steelers have, and his absence was felt on Sunday against the Falcons.
NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN had a new update on the situation around Porter while appearing on The Pat McAfee Show. Schefter confirmed that a trade of Porter could be on the table if the two sides can't come to an agreement.
“The two sides are in a difficult spot where they're trying to find a common ground and they haven't come close to doing it yet.. The Steelers have been open to listening to trade offers...So far, for what they would want back there has not been a lot of trade interest," Schefter said.
For now, Pittsburgh will be hoping that once Porter is cleared to return from the back injury, he will take the field. But the star cornerback has reportedly been considering sitting out until a new deal is reached.
And with the Steelers not wanting to engage during the season, this situation could continue to move forward without a resolution for some time. Pittsburgh needs Porter back, especially if this team wants to make a run to the Super Bowl this season.
