RB Coach Ramon Chinyoung Trying Something New With Pittsburgh Steelers cover image

Former Cowboys assistant Ramon Chinyoung tackles a new challenge, aiming to revitalize the Steelers' run game as their running backs coach.

Ramon Chinyoung Sr. will try something new as he joins the Pittsburgh Steelers’ coaching staff. He will be a running backs coach for the first time in his NFL career.

Chinyoung recently finished his third season as a Dallas Cowboys assistant coach and his first full year as assistant line coach. In 2023-24, when Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy held the same position with the Cowboys, Chinyoung was an assistant offensive line/quality control coach.

The Cowboys were second in the NFL total offense in 2025 under coach Brian Schottenheimer, second in passing, and ninth in rushing. During his time with the Cowboys, Chinyoung worked with two Pro Bowl offensive linemen, Zack Martin and Tyler Smith.

Chinyoung made the jump from high school to the NFL in 2022. He spent one season with the Denver Broncos after coaching at the scholastic level in Houston for 10 seasons from 2012 as an assistant at Westridge High, then two years as the head coach and campus coordinator at Fort Bend Willowbend High.

At Southern University, Chinyoung was an offensive lineman for four season and a two-time all-Southwestern Athletic Conference pick.

Chinyoung inherits a rushing game that was 26th in the league this past season. Pittsburgh's leading rusher, Kenneth Gainwell, is eligible for free agency.

Chinyoung is one of 10 new assistant coaches hired since McCarthy replaced Mike Tomlin on Jan. 27. Chinyoung joins offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio, defensive coordinator Patrick Graham, special teams coordinator Danny Crossman, assistant head coach/secondary coach Joe Whitt Jr., offensive line coach James Campen, assistant offensive line coach Jahri Evans, receivers coach Adam Henry, defensive line coach Domata Peko, and defensive quality control coach Pat Reilly.

The Steelers have retained quarterback Tom Arth and inside linebackers coach Scott McCurley from Tomlin’s staff.

Tomlin resigned one day after Pittsbugh’ season ended with a loss to the Houston Texans in an AFC Wild Card playoff game. He finished with a regular-season record of 193-114-2, tying Hall of Famer Chuck Noll for the franchise wins record. The Steelers went 10-7 this season and won their first AFC North title since 2020.

McCarthy was a head coach with the Green Bay Packers for 13 seasons from 2006-18 and with the Cowboys for five seasons from 2020-24. His record is 174-112-2 during the regular season.
