The Pittsburgh Steelers have reached a three-year, deal $36.75 million deal with cornerback Jamel Dean.
This is a major signing for Pittsburgh as he was one of the top cornerbacks on the free agency market.
The Steelers have been aggressive in addressing some of their biggest needs on the first day of free agency, trading for wide receiver Michael Pittman from the Indianapolis Colts, and now addressing the cornerback position with Dean.
Dean is a veteran corner who has spent his entire seven-year career with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. In the 2025 season, Dean finished with 46 total tackles, a tackle for loss, a sack, three interceptions, nine pass deflections, two forced fumbles, and a touchdown on a pick-six.
Dean helps to solidify the Steelers' secondary alongside Asante Samuel Jr., Jalen Ramsey, and Joey Porter Jr.
Pittsburgh's entering a new era with Mike Tomlin out the door and Mike McCarthy coming in as their new head coach.
McCarthy has had success in the past, winning a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers and having some success with the Dallas Cowboys.
He has shown the ability to create an elite offense, but if the Steelers want to get far, their defense will have to play at a higher level in 2026.
Kim Klement Neitzel-Imagn ImagesDean adds to that, especially with his playmaking ability, as T.J. Watt and Cameron Heyward constantly put pressure on the quarterback, forcing errant throws.
Watt appeared in 14 games in 2025, finishing with 55 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and three forced fumbles.
Heyward had 78 total tackles, nine tackles for loss, 3.5 sacks, and a forced fumble. With the pass rush that Pittsburgh is able to generate, and the addition of a star cornerback in Dean, it will be difficult for opposing offenses in 2026.
This was a splash signing by Omar Khan and the Steelers front office, who appear to be aggressive in improving the roster to repeat as AFC North Champions and make a deeper run in the postseason in McCarthy's first year as their head coach.
