The Pittsburgh Steelers are expected to target offensive linemen as free agency's legal tampering period opens Monday.
Reports indicate the Steelers believe they can’t re-sign guard Issac Seumalo, which heightens this possibility. Over the past three seasons, he has provided a reliable presence up front.
A positive for Pittsburgh is that it has flexibility on the offensive line going into free agency. The Steelers could replace Seumalo with another guard. They could also sign a tackle and move reserve Spencer Anderson to guard.
If Pittsburgh wants to swing big, it could pursue offensive tackle Rasheed Walker, who is set for a big contract after four seasons with the Green Bay Packers.
To better understand Walker’s potential impact, note that the Packers drafted him in the seventh round in 2022, but he has become a key part of their offensive line over the past three years. He played all 51 games from 2023-25 and started 48 of them.
Walker’s overall grades from Pro Football Focus have been middling as he was rated at 66.4, 68.4, and 64.6 over the past three seasons. That ranked him 42nd, 41st, and 52nd among NFL offensive tackles.
However, Walker still shows upside as a 25-year-old, and many view him as a good pass protector on the left side of the line.
These strengths matter for Pittsburgh, as the Steelers’ left tackle spot remains unsettled. Broderick Jones had spinal fusion surgery late last season and might not be ready for training camp in July. Jones’ performance has also disappointed since Pittsburgh drafted him in the first round in 2023.
Pittsburgh could also pursue a low-cost tackle in injury-plagued Jonah Williams. His 2025 season with the Arizona Cardinals ended after sustaining a shoulder injury in Week 10 that required surgery. Williams has the pedigree of being a first-round draft pick in 2019 by the Cincinnati Bengals.
If the Steelers decide to sign a guard instead, they could try to fill Seumalo’s spot with David Edwards or John Simpson. Edwards has played seven seasons in the NFL, four with the Los Angeles Rams and the last three with the Buffalo Bills. Simpson has been in the league for six years, spending three seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, one season with the Baltimore Ravens, and the past two seasons with the New York Jets.
In terms of recent performance, Edwards ranked as the 19th-best guard last season with a 71.4 grade. Seumalo scored 74.8.
Simpson had a down year in 2025 with a 56.9 grade that ranked him 54th. By contrast, in 2024, he ranked 12th among guards, earning a grade of 77.3.
Alternatively, if the Steelers want an older stopgap at guard, 36-year-old Kevin Zeitler could be an option. PFF had him as the No. 13 guard in the NFL last season while playing for the Tennessee Titans. Zeitler is a 14-year veteran who has also played for the Bengals, Cleveland Browns, New York Giants, Ravens, and Detroit Lions.
