Steelers' Aaron Rodgers Candidly Explains Previous Frustration With Calvin Austin cover image

It may not have been the ultimate domino to fall, but a costly mistake from Calvin Austin caused his quarterback Aaron Rodgers to erupt in frustration.

In Austin’s third year with the Pittsburgh Steelers, he’s managed to become a key part of the wide receiver room. He may not be the premier go-to guy, but he’s the type of receiver who can make a difference in the slot or in screen passes.

This time though, he made a gigantic error that played a part in causing Pittsburgh to fall to the Seattle Seahawks.

As the Steelers marched down the field due to an explosive reception from running back Jaylen Warren and eventually landing on Seattle’s five-yard line, Rodgers looked toward the back left corner of the endzone to his tight end Pat Freiermuth.

Austin ran a flat route near the pylon but was covered heavily, and instead of staying in the flat, Austin veered towards the back of the endzone and in the way of Freiermuth.

Ultimately, when Rodgers threw it in that direction, the ball bounced off Freiermuth’s backside and right into Seattle’s Derion Kendrick’s hands for the pick.

The camera then panned to an animated Rodgers yelling in frustration toward Austin.

But there’s no hard feelings between the two, in fact, Rodgers loves Austin. But the sign of frustration was more of an anger on turning the ball over.

"Cal is the best kid ever, but he probably should have just stayed in the flat there," Rodgers expressed. "He knows it. Or he was kind of stealing it from Pat [Freiermuth] or just trying to catch it, put it away, score a touchdown. But Cal's the best kid and it sucks because he's such a great kid, but unfortunately, that whole sequence took points off the board."

Austin in turn, accepted responsibility for the whole sequence, and took accountability for the eventual loss.

"That's most definitely on me," Austin begrudgingly recalled. "That interception wasn't on 8 [Rodgers] or on Pat [Freiermuth] or anything. If I had just stayed on the front pylon, it probably would have been a touchdown. I was in scramble rules. I was in the wrong spot, just trying to make a play. But I gotta do what I'm coached and not, in the spur of the moment, do something to try to make a play."

For now, Austin has held his own and despite the blunder, has formed a decent chemistry with the future Hall of Famer.

Austin has posted 92 yards on five receptions which is good for 18.4 yards per catch.

He’ll have the chance to regain that trust and momentum next Sunday when the Steelers take on the Patriots in Foxboro at 1:00 p.m. ET / 12:00 CT.
