Porter would be a great player for the Cowboys.
It almost feels inevitable now that the Pittsburgh Steelers will eventually move on from cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
Porter, one of the better players at his position over the past few years, didn't play Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons.
It's interesting that the Steelers are going in this direction and not trying to pay him, but according to the latest report, there are a few logical reasons behind it.
One of them is that it's possible Porter could fetch a first-round pick, though it's important to recognize that some teams around the NFL just don't have first-round picks to move, at least not for Porter.
“Dallas has been looking for cornerback help, though more so in the bargain bin to this point. The franchise has trade-market rapport with Pittsburgh GM Omar Khan. The sides have reached deals in back-to-back offseasons, as Dallas traded for wide receiver George Pickens in May 2025 and offensive tackle Broderick Jones on Aug. 29.
“Dallas did not discuss Porter with Pittsburgh at the time of the Jones trade. But that would be an easy call for the Cowboys to make if interested. The problem: Dallas has given up some of its draft capital. The team has seven selections in 2027, but four of those are in the sixth and seventh rounds. Porter would likely cost at least a second-round pick, possibly a first,” Jeremy Fowler of ESPN wrote.
It'll be interesting to see what kind of return the Steelers get, especially if this is the direction the organization decides to go.
Porter has been a very good player, but that doesn't mean that there isn't value in moving on from him. I don't necessarily agree with it, but I can see the reasoning behind it for the right price.
My reasoning for that is questioning whether the Steelers are contenders. They look fine on paper and have a chance to win some games, but is this really a team that has a chance to win a Super Bowl? I question that a bit.
Perhaps that's part of their thinking, too, though I believe they have a feeling they can win.
