The Pittsburgh Steelers are facing a self-inflicted problem during their discussions with Joey Porter Jr.
Over the last couple of weeks, the Pittsburgh Steelers' contract situation with cornerback Joey Porter Jr. has become one of the most talked about storylines in the NFL.
Porter is looking to be paid at the top of the cornerback market. To this point, the Steelers have not seemed willing to meet him at that level of pay.
With Week 1 just under two weeks away, Pittsburgh has a clear deadline in mind. Omar Khan has been open that the Steelers will not negotiate contracts during the regular season. That could cause some issues with the Porter situation.
Should the two sides fail to reach a new agreement before Week 1 arrives, things could get interesting down the road.
Pro Football Talk NFL insider Mike Florio issued a warning to the Steelers about not getting a deal done with Porter before the start of the season.
"The insistence on not doing contracts after the regular season starts puts extra pressure on both sides to reach a solution before September 13, when the Steelers host the Falcons," Florio wrote.
"After that, neither side will have an off-ramp — and Porter’s next move could result in a showdown that will do nothing to help the organization continue its 19-year run of no losing records."
Since the start of the contract standoff, there have been many rumors about Pittsburgh potentially trading Porter. Despite the rumors, the Steelers have not seemingly shown interest in actually shopping him around in trade talks.
Porter is coming off of a 2025 season with Pittsburgh that saw him play in 14 games. He racked up 52 total tackles to go along with a sack, an interception, and 14 defended passes.
Throughout his three-year NFL career thus far, the 26-year-old cornerback has played in 47 games. He has totaled 165 tackles, a sack, three interceptions, and 31 defended passes.
Whether or not the Steelers are going to get a deal done with Porter remains to be seen. He has quickly become a fan favorite in Pittsburgh, especially with his dad being a former star for the franchise. Fans are holding out hope that the Steelers will be able to keep Porter around long-term.
Only time will tell, but the Week 1 self-imposed deadline is coming up quickly. Pittsburgh has the right to have its own rules, but in this situation the rules could come back to haunt the team.
