Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy is already facing major pressure in his first season with the team.
The 2026 NFL season is going to look quite a bit different for the Pittsburgh Steelers. After longtime head coach Mike Tomlin chose to step down after the 2025 season, the team moved quickly to hire Mike McCarthy to replace him.
Of note, McCarthy has a long history with Steelers starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The two had a lot of success alongside of each other during their time with the Green Bay Packers.
At the end of the day, the writing was on the wall for Tomlin and Pittsburgh. Rumors had been swirling all season last year that the Steelers could consider a change if they didn't make a run in the playoffs. Perhaps that change is exactly what was needed.
However, the fact of the matter is that McCarthy is facing pressure to both live up to the winning ways that Tomlin has showcased and also improve the team come playoff time.
With that being said, Sports Illustrated NFL insider Albert Breer has named McCarthy as one of the head coaches facing the most pressure this season.
“I look at three teams with first-year coaches in Buffalo, Baltimore and Pittsburgh, and this is a different situation than most first-year coaches walk into,” Breer said. “Pittsburgh was in the playoffs last year… I think it’s a lot more pressure than it normally would be on a first-year head coach to perform.”
“And on the quarterbacks, of course, in these spots, Aaron Rodgers, his last hurrah as an NFL quarterback… [Mike McCarthy is] under a unique level of pressure.”
McCarthy sat out the 2025 NFL season after a five-year tenure as the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Before that, he spent 13 years with the Packers as their lead coach.
Throughout his entire NFL coaching career, McCarthy has compiled a 174-112-2 record. He has gone 11-11 in the playoffs and led Green Bay to a Super Bowl win back in 2010.
No one can argue that McCarthy doesn't have the experience or ability to lead the Steelers on a successful run. But, if his first season is underwhelming, Pittsburgh would face pressure to find another replacement.
Only time will tell what the 2026 NFL season has in store for the Steelers and McCarthy. The fact that he is already facing so much pressure could make for a dramatic season full of outside noise from the media.
