The Pittsburgh Steelers had a quarterback question to answer throughout the offseason and attempted to address that by landing youngster Drew Allar. There seems to be hope that Allar will eventually be the guy Pittsburgh relies on, though it still remains to be seen what the short-term plan is.
Right now, the Steelers have a lot to like on both sides of the football, in the short and long term. However, they also need to decide what they want to do in the short term regarding the number of quarterbacks on the roster. The Steelers have Aaron Rodgers, Allar, Will Howard, and Mason Rudolph. When asked recently, a Pittsburgh insider believed it makes a lot of sense and isn't as uncommon as people make it seem.
Most teams don't carry four quarterbacks on their roster, but considering all four of them legitimately have a role in this offense or either the long- or short-term future of this team, it's really not crazy to say they should all be there.
“Steeler Joe: Hey, Gerry -- thanks for the chat. I know it's been asked a hundred times, but: Is there a legitimate scenario where the Steelers keep four QBs? It seems like this is the rare situation where it would make a lot of sense.
“Gerry Dulac: It does make a lot of sense and it's not as rare as you think. Part of the logic is this: Your starter is retiring after the season, you don't want to bring in another veteran to be the starter, and you have two young guys who you think are pretty good. Plus, every move you have made the past 2-3 years, including with the head coach, is to bring in veteran guys to get you over the top, which is why keeping Rudolph is in line with that thinking. I'll hang up and listen.”
I'm really curious to see what happens with Rudolph, more than anybody. As I've said before, I question why the Steelers would move on from him.
It's possible another team is willing to give up a decent asset or two for him, especially if their starting quarterback goes down, but it also raises the question of whether Allar or Howard is good enough to step in and play right away.
