The Pittsburgh Steelers have a contract situation to figure out with star cornerback Joey Porter Jr.
Porter, who played his college football days at Penn State, is in a position to get paid handsomely, depending on when it comes. Unfortunately for the young man, it doesn't seem like the Steelers are in too much of a rush to get a deal finalized.
As of right now, the Steelers have to figure out whether they want to pay up for Porter or bring this into the season and next offseason while potentially harming the relationship.
If one thing is for certain, while Porter is at practice, it doesn't seem like he's too happy about what's unfolded behind closed doors. Speaking to reporters, he added that he has to hope that decision-makers ahead of him offer him the money he's looking for.
"Really can't speak too much about the future," Porter said, per ESPN. "But today I was out there today running with the guys, still trying to get back fully, but we're going to take it day by day for the most part. And that's the same page me and Coach have been on so far."
"I mean, I could hope and think all day," Porter said. "But it's really, it's up to those guys upstairs, and what they want to do with this team. So all I could do is just show up every day to work and be prepared."
Right now, it remains uncertain whether Porter will play before a deal is done. It isn't guaranteed that he'll sit out, but there's also no guarantee he wants to play without a guaranteed amount of money in his new contract.
We see this a lot during NFL offseasons, so I'm hopeful the Steelers will eventually get something done.
It's tough to get upset with Porter feeling this way, too. He has to watch out for himself and after dealing with an injury this offseason, there are so many things that could be going through his head.
Rightfully so, too, as this is his best chance to get the money he deserves.
