Despite a stellar 6-2 start, Pittsburgh needs to add.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have to feel very good about what they've been able to do on both sides of the football, although I also think it's important to recognize that they've beaten teams that they should.
I don't think the Steelers have done anything that crazy this season, sitting at 6-2 on the year.
The Steelers have some nice wins, but ultimately, a lot of these games were expected to be won, so I don't want to say they've played perfect football. At the same time, sitting in first place in the AFC North is obviously a very good sign for this organization, and it has to feel like they understand they need to make the necessary moves over the next couple of days to improve at this year's NFL trade deadline.
The most pressing need is adding a wide receiver who can come in and make plays at a big-time level for Aaron Rodgers.
Guys like Josh Downs have been discussed, Garrett Wilson has been floated as a trade candidate around the league recently, and some other guys would be of help.
However, according to the latest report from one longtime Steelers insider, it doesn't sound like the organization is going into this year's deadline with an assumption that it has to make a trade, as crazy as that might sound.
"They're not looking to make a move, and they're certainly not looking to get rid of one of their players," Gerry Dulac said, H/T Steelers Depot. "If they go 6-2, they certainly won't trade one of their players because they figure they're a contender. If somebody comes knocking, you never know what might be out there, but right now they're not actively thinking we need to make a trade."
As I've said, since the Steelers re-signed Rodgers, I would never understand how the organization would bring back a guy of that age and not try to go all out this year.
That's why I always questioned the Joey Porter Jr. trade, too, though that doesn't seem to be having too much of an effect in Pittsburgh. Not adding to an offense that clearly needs another wide receiver, however, would be a bigger problem than that.
If the Steelers don't want to do that, they'd be playing a risky game here, and with Rodgers being this old, and understanding that it's his last season, it might be the last time to contend for quite some time unless Pittsburgh has a trade for a quarterback up its sleeve. Perhaps there's something going on behind the scenes to ensure that, but that doesn't seem to be the case as of now.
Because it isn't, there's no reason why the Steelers shouldn't be making a trade to improve, even if it's marginally.
