The Pittsburgh Steelers have lived in the middle for a long time now. They’ve been enough to matter and be respected, but not bad enough to get the quarterback they need for the long term.

That’s why Anthony Licciardi of Sporting News linking Pittsburgh to Trinidad Chambliss feels like something that could make sense, as the Ole Miss quarterback showed a lot of good in recent months.

I like the idea of the Steelers bringing in a quarterback to pair with a veteran like Aaron Rodgers, if he decides to keep playing.

The Steelers are built to compete every year, even if that means having a weird quarterback situation, but learning under Rodgers could change that.

Licciardi laid out the reasoning for the Steelers to like him, adding that Chambliss is someone who could be worth the risk.

“Assuming the Steelers like Chambliss as a prospect, Pittsburgh is among the most straightforward fits for his services. Aaron Rodgers is on the wrong side of 40 and a mood swing away from retirement. Yet, the Steelers are in the playoffs, once again stepping into quarterback purgatory. They have no route to a top-pick passer and little reason to tear the whole thing down in pursuit of one.

“Chambliss, either late on Day 1 or with the team's second-round selection, makes sense as a good-process dart throw. Pittsburgh is also projected to have four Day 2 picks. This seems like the only way out of mediocrity for the Steelers, and Rodgers' return would offer Chambliss an incredible mentor in the early going,” he wrote.

The Steelers aren’t in a position to draft at the top of the draft, but it remains uncertain if Chambliss will go that high.

At this stage, Rodgers’ presence as a mentor would be awesome for a young quarterback learning how to prepare and succeed at the highest level.

I like the idea because it works for both sides. Chambliss gets patience and a great place to play, and the Steelers get upside without forcing a timeline that doesn’t need to be rushed.

Depending on where he’s drafted, this could be a great idea.
