The Pittsburgh Steelers typically have boring drafts. Boring drafts have won them Super Bowls in the past, so I don't want to say it's wrong to go in the direction the Steelers have throughout much of their existence, though some fans would like to see them take more risks and have more fun in the draft.
The Steelers obviously haven't made many big selections at quarterback or skill positions, but the hope is that could change this draft cycle.
With all of the needs the Steelers have on the offensive side of the football, taking a wide receiver would be a wise decision. However, when we actually look at the history of the Steelers' draft decisions, it doesn't seem very likely that a wide receiver is on the way.
“Since Khan and Weidl took over the Steelers’ front office in 2023, Roman Wilson is the only receiver the Steelers have selected in the new front office’s first three draft classes, taken as a third-round pick from 2024. He’s yet to record 200 receiving yards in his first two seasons, and the question remains whether the new front office can replicate the success the old front office had in drafting receivers.
“That’s also in part because the Steelers have invested most of their picks in the offensive and defensive lines during those drafts, with eight picks between the two position groups. Now, the Steelers can turn their focus to the position the way several other NFL teams have in earlier rounds of the draft,” Christopher Carter of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette wrote.
This obviously doesn't mean the Steelers won't take a wide receiver, as they've been linked to plenty and have met with some, but it does add some context to what might happen.
We can unfortunately only go based on history with what the Steelers have done, so I wouldn’t be too surprised if they don’t go with a wide receiver in this draft class, even if many want them to.
