Boomer Esiason warns that civil unrest in France could target Sunday’s matchup, questioning if local security can shield players and fans from protesters seeking a global stage.
The Week 7 contest between the New Orleans Saints and Pittsburgh Steelers set for Paris appears to be moving full-steam ahead despite the violent protests happening in "The City of Love."
The league is working with officials in Paris for security matters amid the unrest. Per the AP, the NFL claims there has been "no disruption of impact" at the sites that will host the league teams.
On Monday, former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason was asked by a caller on WFAN why the league would still have the game be played in Paris despite the protests. Esiason noted that the NFL says there is no unrest currently where the game is to be played, which is why the league intends to keep the game there.
But Esiason had a warning for the Steelers, Saints, and NFL, noting that the best way to "amplify" the unrest would be to have it "be around an NFL football game in France." He's not sure the local government can actually protect the NFL and its teams, saying the situation is as "bad" as ever with just a few days to go before the game on Sunday.
It's a sobering thought that the protesters could be waiting for the game to be played before potentially using the contest as a way to make their political point. Still, the league has to know that's a potential option, and has decided not to make any changes as of yet.
The league knew about the field in Brazil not being ideal for the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys, but opted to have the game played there anyways. Fortunately, there wasn't a big issue for the league during the game.
But the situation in Paris is a little different than having a patchy field that could be somewhat fixed with stitched grass.
Sunday's game is big for the Steelers.
The Steelers have won two games in a row heading into their clash with the Saints. Pittsburgh has an opportunity to improve to 5-2 on the season with a win over New Orleans in Week 7.
The Steelers defense has played great recently, and they'll go against a Saints offense that put up 34 points on the New York Giants in Week 6. For Pittsburgh's offense, the Saints defense provides Aaron Rodgers and Co. a chance to find their rhythm after a slow start against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 6.
