Patrick Graham is mandating a strict new "Steeler language" to eliminate errors, forcing veterans and rookies alike to master precise terminology before facing elite AFC North rivals.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ new coaching staff is bringing a renewed sense of urgency on both sides of the ball this spring, and that could pay dividends in the fall.

The Steelers made notable upgrades on offense at receiver and the offensive line. With Aaron Rodgers coming back for a second season, the offense should be much better this fall.

Pittsburgh will still need its veteran core to be elite in order to compete for the AFC North this fall. After all, Baltimore Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson and Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow should be much better in 2026 as they regained their health this offseason.

Defensive coordinator Patrick Graham is stressing communication this spring as the team learns a new scheme, and it could be an abrupt change for some veterans on the defense.

"The No. 1 thing is 'Steeler communication.' It's not how we did it in Green Bay or how [Graham] did it with the Raiders or wherever," assistant head coach Joe Whitt said, via the Steelers. "It's how we do it and call things here. We're very particular about, 'OK, this is what we're calling this route combination, this is what we're calling this check.' Don't say, 'Oh, it's just like this from what we called it here with the Steelers last year.'

"No, it's not. This is how we're calling it this year. This is how we're doing this. The quicker we can get those guys on the page of Steeler language and how we're doing it, the way PG wants to do it, you won't see any errors in the back end."

The new scheme will help all defensive players old and young alike stay on the same page this season. Linebacker Payton Wilson suggested Graham and the staff are taking extra steps to make sure young guys on the defense know their responsibilities instead of just relying on veterans to set the defense.

"When they ask a question, we need to answer it with a certain language, if not, it's the wrong answer," Wilson said. "So, making sure everybody's on the same page. I think he does a really good job of not assuming people know.

"We do have a lot of older guys on the defensive side that have been around for a long time, but he still goes over it and he's still very detailed in his work, and it's awesome to be under that as a player."

The defensive reset should be a change for the better this fall.

Pittsburgh struggled with consistency under former head coach Mike Tomlin last season. Communication could be the key to making sure the Steelers are ready to defend what's coming on each snap in 2026.
