The Pittsburgh Steelers likely aren’t done reshaping their wide receiver room just yet, and there are a few different ways to go. The Steelers have a decent room with DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr., but there’s always room for more after what we’ve seen from the Steelers in recent years.
After Denver’s blockbuster trade for Jaylen Waddle, some have wondered what that means for the rest of the Broncos’ receiving group.
Steelers Depot Alex Kozora recently wrote about why the Steelers should be paying attention to the situation in Denver, pointing to a potential opportunity to acquire Marvin Mims Jr. Mims has suddenly been thrown in trade rumors over the past few days.
“Last week, Denver made a blockbuster deal to acquire Miami Dolphins‘ wideout Jaylen Waddle. It’s a major move that puts the Broncos in win-now mode,” Kozora wrote.
“Adding Waddle leaves a surplus. Denver might be looking to offload a receiver now buried on the depth chart.”
Mims is an intriguing target because it isn’t like he’s a bad player, but he has nowhere to play right now.
“Since entering the NFL in 2023, Mims ranks second league-wide in punt return average at a healthy 15.6 yards on 74 runbacks with one score,” Kozora wrote.
“He’s less successful as a kick returner, 26th league-wide at 26.6 yards, but that would be a breath of fresh air for a Pittsburgh team struggling to get out of the basement. Mims would come in as the starting kick and punt returner, and after the draft, probably a No. 4 receiver.”
Special teams have been inconsistent, and adding a proven returner would immediately help. At the same time, The key question, as always, is what he’d cost. With Denver potentially looking to trade him, it shouldn’t be too much. On the other hand, it could be more than we all think right now.
Mims wouldn’t fix all of the Steelers issues on that side of the football, but it’d be a nice start. At the end of the day, Pittsburgh needs to find a quarterback before there’s much to talk about here.
