While the NFL draft is the biggest story of the week, the Pittsburgh Steelers still have some questions to answer on their current roster. The Steelers, obviously without an answer from Aaron Rodgers, find themselves in a rather strange position.
Considering all of the good that Rodgers has done throughout his career, it's fair to want him back, but it's also important not to discredit the other guys who have a chance to win a job.
Of course, Mason Rudolph and Will Howard are far from what Rodgers is, even at this stage of his career. That doesn't mean Rudolph and Howard can't be good players in Pittsburgh, as Rudolph has already been decent, but we're talking about a Hall of Famer in one of probably the best five quarterbacks that we've ever seen in the game.
Importantly, however, it was good to see Cameron Heyward stick up for his guys. He had a lot to say about both of them, and from the sound of things, no matter who is under center, he's ready to go to war with anybody and expects to win with his quarterbacks, no matter who wins the job.
"I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Mason Rudolph," said Heyward, who spoke with CBS Sports via USAA. "I think both of those guys, they give us a leg up in different ways. Mason has earned his spot. Went to Tennessee (for the 2024 season), came back, and when Mason's had to step up, he's stepped up in those moments.
"With Will, I think there's a lot of intrigue there because he didn't play his rookie year. He didn't get as many reps as he wanted to, but when he got those reps, he made the most of them, especially in practice. He was always trying to compete against the ones, and when you watch his pedigree of winning a national championship at Ohio State, you're like, 'Man, what can he do at the next level?' So, we'll see. I know we'll have a little bit of battle there. You never know who's going to be the third quarterback to round out that group."
Heyward is the definition of a professional, so it's not surprising to hear him say that. Whether he truly believes it is one thing, but it's very cool to see him stick up for his guys.
