There is a lot of intrigue into what this 2026 Pittsburgh Steelers offense is going to look like in the final year of Aaron Rodgers' Hall of Fame career.
While the running back and tight end rotations will be incredibly fascinating, the wide receiver room cannot be left behind in that discussion. DK Metcalf is the No. 1, but behind him are a few names that could emerge as major targets for Rodgers.
Mike DeFabo of The Athletic reported that, at training camp, there is a new slot receiver in Pittsburgh, and it's not 2026 rookie Germie Bernard. Instead, it's 2024 third-round pick Roman Wilson who received the "overwhelming majority" of WR3 snaps.
"As anticipated, Roman Wilson got the overwhelming majority of WR3 reps in 11 personnel (three receivers)," DeFabo writes. "In some instances, the Steelers put Wilson and rookie Germie Bernard on the field together, with Bernard playing outside and Wilson in the slot."
The Steelers handing the slot receiver duties over to Wilson wouldn't be a huge surprise, as the third-year receiver taken in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Michigan is finally getting a good chance to earn significant playing time.
Wilson missed almost all of the 2024 NFL season. Last year, in 13 games, Wilson caught 12 of 21 targets for 166 yards and two touchdowns.
While there's still a lot of room for Wilson to improve, he is the current favorite to be the team's No. 3 wide receiver behind Metcalf and Michael Pittman.
Bernard, the exciting Alabama rookie receiver, doesn't appear to be someone who'll see much playing time if he's not sliding into the slot receiver spot.
Pittman and Metcalf are starters for the Steelers, and Wilson is the team's slot receiver for the upcoming 2026 season.
This update is a big one for Wilson, as the 2024 third-round pick is slated to be the team's starting slot receiver for Rodgers and Mike McCarthy.
This is going to be his best chance to break out, as the attention Metcalf and Pittman bring should help Wilson get weaker coverage and an easier time getting open.
While the jury is still out for how good Wilson will look in this new-look offense under McCarthy, this is a good first sign that, at training camp, he's seemingly earned the starting slot role.
