Pittsburgh Steelers GM Sings Jalen Ramsey's Praises cover image

Pittsburgh Steelers GM Omar Khan likes Jalen Ramsey's versatility and unselfish play, seemingly putting an end to trade speculation.

There has been speculation that the Pittsburgh Steelers might trade Jalen Ramsey this offseason.

The idea of doing so makes some sense. At 31, with 10 years in the NFL, Ramsey has slowed down despite being a three-time All-Pro and an eight-time Pro Bowler.

Ramsey is now a slot cornerback after once being one of the best defensive players in the game because of his work on the outside. Ramsey moved to safety last season when the Steelers were beset by injuries early in the season.

Ramsey’s cap number is $19.5 million in 2026. Despite being a Pro Bowler last season, it’s a lot of money to pay an aging safety. If Pittsburgh trades Ramsey, all $19.5 million would be removed from their books.

Steelers general manager Omar Khan doesn’t sound like he is going to ship Ramsey out of town, though. Khan appreciates how much of a team player Ramsey was after coming to Pittsburgh, despite having been traded three times and a checkered past. Ramsey also became a favorite of former coach Mike Tomlin.

"You can't say enough about what he did for us early in the season,” Khan said of Ramsey. “He switched positions. He hadn't practiced it all spring, and then he went in there and did it for us. He's one of the most unselfish football players I've been around."

Ramsey helped the Steelers win the AFC North for the first time since 2020, tying a career high with 88 tackles, recording the fourth and fifth sacks of his career, and having one interception.

Pro Football Focus graded Ramsey 47th of 91 NFL safeties with a 64.4 mark. He scored much higher in run defense (81.2) than in pass coverage (58.8).

Khan says new coach Mike McCarthy would prefer to keep Ramsey.

"I can't say enough good things about him,” Khan said. “His approach to the game is really awesome, his preparation. His role will kind of shake out as the new coaching staff comes in, but he's got versatility. You can play him at corner, at nickel, or at safety. There are a lot of different things you can do; you can blitz him. I know the new coaching staff is excited to work with him.”
