The Steelers have themselves in a precarious position, now with the injury to Calvin Austin, with his return to action still unknown.
Austin has become a reliable option for future Hall of Fame quarterback Aaron Rodgers, but now with his injury, his options have become very limited.
Over the past few weeks, the Steelers have been exploring trade options for a quality wide receiver that helps slide Austin into primarily a slot wide receiver. Initially, Pittsburgh was looking at Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill, whose relationship with the team was already murky.
Of course, after Hill suffered a gruesome season ending injury this past Monday, it has quickly limited the Steelers’ options.
A quick, internal option could be Wilson, who Pittsburgh drafted in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Wilson has had a hard time cracking the roster since becoming a pro, and it doesn’t seem like coach Mike Tomlin is giving him any grace.
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette’s Ray Fittipaldo spoke on 93.7 The Fan, and he doesn’t believe that the Steelers are all that confident that Wilson can take the reins.
"I think Roman's gonna get a shot, but I still think they're learning about him and what his game is and how he can help the football team," he said. "Ben Skowronek, they know they can utilize him. Scotty Miller is the guy who can play every position. So there's a lot of trust in Scotty Miller. I just think Steelers coaches are looking around and saying, 'OK, we know we have a talent here in Roman Wilson. How can we best utilize him?' I don't think they've figured that out yet.
What’s fascinating about that quote is that in the past two seasons, both Skowronek and Miller have been a part of the Steelers. And in those two seasons, they have combined for a total of 17 targets, 11 receptions, and 91 receiving yards.
Sure, Skowronek and Miller are veterans, who have been a part of Super Bowl winning franchises in the past, but just how much trust do they have in them if they’ve posted those combined totals?
Is Wilson that much in the doghouse, that he can’t even hurdle those two?
Wide receiver coach Zach Azzanni dispelled those rumors real fast.
“There’s no ‘Roman’s in the doghouse’ or anything like that. Roman’s doing just fine. We just happen to be pretty good at tight end and wideout and what we’re doing, running the ball. But Roman, he’s in the mix just like all the other guys. Obviously, his role will keep elevating as the season goes on, for sure.”
Surely, coaches won’t ever let the media take a peak behind the curtain if there was negative news.
The only thing we can do is in Week 6, watch closely if number 10 is involved in the action.
