Trust isn't won easily from a 41-year-old quarterback, but Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Roman Wilson is starting to gain it from Aaron Rodgers.
Rodgers showed his increasing belief in Wilson last Sunday night in a 35-25 loss to the Green Bay Packers at Acrisure Stadium. Wilson, in his second season, set career highs with four receptions and 74 yards while scoring his first NFL touchdown. Before Sunday, Wilson had just four catches all season for 36 yards.
A large part of the trust receivers gain comes during practice. In Wilson's case, he caught Rodgers' attention three days before last week's game.
"Every play is watched from practice, so it's the attention to detail on the routes," Rodgers said Wednesday during his weekly media availability. "I think that's sometimes lost. You might, even in a game situation, get so enamored with what a guy's doing, who's around the ball, getting targeted, but a lot of times things that happen in the succeeding weeks are because of things you've seen on film, on the backside of plays where a guy's not getting the ball, and you see the detail in the craft in the routes.
"The other day, he got the ball on Thursday, on a number of plays, and that was positive. But there were some other routes on the backside when he didn't get the ball, where you started to see some of the craft show up, some of the detail in the routes that gives you confidence that you can trust. And so that's what it is."
Wilson was the Steelers' third-round draft pick in 2024 from Michigan. However, Wilson was limited to only one game in his rookie season because of hamstring and knee injuries and had no receptions.
This season, Wilson had only one reception in the first four games but has six catches in the last two games. Rodgers sounds like Wilson will be getting more targets, perhaps this Sunday when the Steelers (4-3) host the Indianapolis Colts (7-1) at Acrisure Stadium.
Wilson could be following the path of veteran tight end Pat Freiermuth, who also did not become a large part of the passing game this season until having five receptions for 111 yards and two touchdowns and a loss to the Cincinnati Bengals two weeks ago. Freiermuth had just two catches in the previous three games.
"I really like his attitude," Rodgers said of Wilson. "I think of all the guys who we expected to make an impact starting the season – especially him and Pat – and not get off to the most explosive starts, but to never once have a negative day – energy-wise, attitude-wise – is a credit to both of those guys. I'm really proud of both of them."
