Should the Texans draft Max Iheanachor?
The 2026 NFL Draft is upon us, which means most analysts are releasing their final mock drafts. These exercises are meant to simulate how they believe the first round will go after an entire draft cycle of information. Because of this, these are the most accurate mocks of the year (mostly). Luckily for the Texans, Daniel Jeremiah gave them a home-run selection with Arizona State offensive tackle Max Iheanachor in his last mock.
It’s important to remember that no mocks are perfect. Every analyst will make mistakes, often lots of them. A pick isn’t set in stone until the draft card is handed in.
The Texans need to consider Max Iheanachor
The offensive line is undoubtedly the Texans' biggest need this offseason. CJ Stroud was constantly under duress, especially in the playoffs. They must address the group to see any success in the postseason. As a result, Iheanachor is an ideal selection for the Texans. His athleticism, upside, and frame would give Stroud a reliable blocker who would consistently keep him upright.
“The Texans have reconstructed their offensive line with some versatile pieces this offseason,” Jeremiah wrote. “Long term, Iheanachor has a chance to start opposite Aireontae Ersery at offensive tackle, but Houston can take its time developing the rookie.”
Iheanachor is a developmental prospect who shouldn’t immediately start. He’s still improving his technique, which isn’t a surprise as he started playing football five years ago. Luckily for the Texans, he wouldn't have to start. They signed right tackle Braden Smith on a two-year contract to be their bridge player. This allows Iheanachor to develop before eventually taking the reins either next year or during 2028.
Although Iheanachor isn’t a finished product, the potential is evident. The six-foot-six, 330-pound player has impressive movement skills, stemming from his basketball and soccer background. He has quick feet, which helps him mirror opposing defenders and stay balanced.
Additionally, there are flashes of great technique from Iheanachor; he just needs to grow more consistent. At times, he has impeccable punch timing and accuracy, which disrupts a defender's pass rush and allows him to reach their chest. Once he’s there, Iheanchor’s iron-clad hands don’t release the foe. On plays like these, he looks like a franchise cornerstone.
Overall, Max Iheanachor isn’t a finished product, but he has the potential to become a bookend tackle for the Texans. They must protect CJ Stroud, which should be their priority in round one. Perhaps there isn’t a better option than Iheanachor. He would be an amazing value addition if given time to develop rather than being thrown into the fire.
