Should the Texans be interested in Kewan Lacy next offseason?
It’s never to look ahead to next year’s draft, and one of the latest 2027 NFL Mock Drafts has the Houston Texans added Ole Miss running back Kewan Lacy. Lacy’s elite athleticism, vision, and ability to break tackles make him a premier player in college football and someone who would instantly elevate the Texans' backfield.
Before we begin, it’s important to note the intention of these pre-season mock drafts. They aren’t supposed to predict what will happen in April. It’s far too early for anything of that nature, as plenty will change throughout the season. However, that doesn’t lessen their value. Instead, these mocks are meant to identify talented prospects and positions of need heading into the season. So, fans should look out for Kewan Lacy and other running backs throughout the season. Who knows? They may resurface next offseason.
That said, this mock notes that Lacy could be an intriguing fit for the Texans and would address a questionable position group.
“David Montgomery and Woody Marks should be a solid 1-2 punch for the Houston backfield this season, but Montgomery will be 30 next June, and Marks is may be better suited for a change-of-pace role,” the article said. “Lacy is an explosive runner with home-run ability and the pass-catching skills to be a true featured back on all three downs.”
As mentioned, Lacy is a three-down running back who burst onto the national landscape last year with 1,564 rushing yards and 24 touchdowns. He’s a superb athlete and has blazing vertical speed that makes him a dangerous threat. He’s a rapid accelerator and can consistently outrun defenders in a footrace, even against an advantageous angle.
Lacy thrives at reading the defense behind the line of scrimmage. He pairs amazing vision with the patience to let his blocks set up. This helps him survey the field and find an open gap. Once he does, he uses his aforementioned burst and flies through the lane.
Beyond this, Lacy is a hassle to tackle. He combines staggering power with impressive elusiveness that keeps defenders guessing. At one moment, he may choose to run through a defender’s chest, then use a quick juke to evade them on the next play. This was evident in 2025 as he ranked third in the NCAA with 89 missed tackles forced against PFF.
As previously stated, it’s too early to say anything definitive about Kewan Lacy to the Texans. However, the fit is undeniably interesting, and the two are a potential pairing during the 2027 NFL Draft. Fans should keep this in mind throughout the season and keep an eye on the dynamic running back.
