Houston traded up to get its guy.
The Houston Texans didn’t wait around to land one of the top defensive linemen in the 2026 NFL Draft.
After entering the second round with a clear opportunity to add more talent in the trenches, Houston traded up with the Las Vegas Raiders to select Ohio State defensive tackle Kayden McDonald with the No. 36 overall pick. The move ensured the Texans got their guy early on Day 2 rather than risking a slide down the board.
McDonald arrives in Houston as one of the most decorated interior defenders in this year’s class. Viewed by some evaluators as the top defensive tackle available, he gives the Texans a powerful run-stuffing presence in the middle of their defense. He also brings the type of physical profile, production and pedigree that should translate quickly at the next level.
Last season, McDonald earned Unanimous All-American honors at Ohio State, further cementing himself as one of the best defensive players in college football. His ability to hold up at the point of attack, clog rushing lanes and create disruption from the interior made him one of the premier defensive prospects in the class.
For Houston, this is another investment in a roster that has continued to grow around a young core. The Texans clearly identified McDonald as a priority target and were aggressive enough to move up and secure him.
With the pick, Houston adds a high-upside defensive tackle who should have a chance to compete for meaningful snaps early in his rookie season. For a team looking to take another step forward, adding a player like McDonald to the defensive front is a strong start to the second round.
