Should the Texans consider Isaac Brown in the 2027 NFL Draft?
Louisville running back Isaac Brown had a historic Week 6 performance against Florida State and is a fascinating 2027 NFL Draft prospect, with unparalleled speed and burst. He’s an intriguing target for the Houston Texans and would give CJ Stroud a constant home-run threat.
Despite a slow start in 2026, Brown rebounded and dominated last week with 235 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries. His day was highlighted by a 97-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter that jump-started the Cardinal’s offense, eventually ending with 44 points.
This performance is just a glimpse of Brown’s potential. The five-foot-nine, 190-pound junior is a high-upside prospect who uses his world-class speed to torch defenses. He’s the fastest running back in the nation and will likely run a sub-4.3 40-yard dash next offseason. He’s uncatchable in the open field, gliding past defenders.
Beyond this, Brown is a twitchy athlete who pairs rapid acceleration with instant deceleration. This, paired with his underrated vision and patience, helps him find open lanes and reach top speed before reaching the defense.
Brown is slippery in space, using his burst and various juke/spin moves to make defenders look silly. He’s already forced 27 missed tackles in 2026. Even if a defender penetrates the backfield, Brown’s one-cut ability lets him sidestep the rusher and avoid a negative play.
The main concern with Brown is his strength. He’s not a between-the-tackles runner and won’t consistently break tackles. He forces missed tackles with his aforementioned elusiveness, but he’s not powerful enough to run through defenders. As a result, he must be paired with a workhorse back so he can be a change-of-pace, home-run threat.
Fortunately for the Texans, David Montgomery thrives in this role. He’s aging, 29 years old, but would be a perfect complement next to Brown with his staggering power and prowess running through the heart of a defense.
Additionally, the Texans need a dynamic threat like Brown. Currently, their running back room lacks this, stranding CJ Stroud on early downs and eliminating the threat of the rushing game. Woody Marks is a solid player, but isn’t a game-wrecking threat. Because of this, they must find an explosive option who can threaten the defense.
It’s still early, but Isaac Brown is emerging as an enticing mid-round target for the Texans. He could be the explosive threat Houston needs to make the jump to a Super Bowl contender.
