Should the Texans consider AJ Holmes in the 2027 NFL Draft?

The Houston Texans have arguably the most dominant defensive line in the NFL. Still, they can always improve, particularly on the interior. If they do, one prospect they must consider in the 2027 NFL Draft is Texas Tech defensive tackle AJ Holmes.

Before we dive in, it’s important to note what summer scouting is. It’s not finalized reports or declarations that the Texans must draft a prospect. Instead, it’s meant to help fans identify talented players that they could target next offseason. So, don’t think of Holmes as a perfect addition, but as someone to watch who could resurface in April.

Having said that, AJ Holmes pairs an impressive run-stuffing ability with potential to develop into an impactful pass rusher. The six-foot-three, 300-pound redshirt senior was hidden among Texas Tech’s illustrious defensive line, highlighted by 2026 NFL Draft picks David Bailey, Lee Hunter, and Romello Height. Now, he’s set to break out onto the national scene and headline another elite Red Raiders’ squad.

Holmes is strong against the run and uses his violent hand usage to shed defenders and penetrate the backfield. He has a sturdy, albeit inconsistent, anchor that can make him immovable against a single blocker. Additionally, he has a quick first step that allows him to split blocks and reach the backfield instantly after the ball’s been snapped.

Beyond that, Holmes’ agility and speed are evident as a pass rusher. Oftentimes, he’s quicker than his opposing blocker and can cause them to get unbalanced with his aforementioned hand usage. He’s still developing a pass-rush arsenal, but he’s shown a willingness to implement moves.

Holmes played his role perfectly last year: be a stout counterpart to the aforementioned options. However, his biggest task in 2026 is to show scouts he’s not just a complement, but a game-wrecking presence. If Holmes does, his stock will skyrocket, and he could enter early-day two/late-day one conversations.

Holmes should intrigue the Texans as he’s the three-down threat their defensive line needs. They have talent at defensive tackle, highlighted by veteran Sheldon Rankins, Tommy Togiai, and 2025 second-round pick Kayden McDonald. However, they lack an explosive pass rusher and could invest in the unit next offseason.

It’s still way too early for anything conclusive, but AJ Holmes is a talented prospect who could make sense in the 2027 NFL Draft. Texans fans should keep an eye on him throughout the season as he could be DeMeco Ryans next defensive weapon.
