Taking a look at three key areas to watch as the Houston Texans take on the Buffalo Bills in Week 1.

The Houston Texans are hoping to start the season strong, and to do that, it will take a strong effort as the Texans have a tough test in Week 1 as they take on the Buffalo Bills at home in NRG Stadium.

While the Bills are a top AFC contender, Houston has given Buffalo a lot of trouble over the past few seasons, which has led to the Texans winning the last two matchups.

So, heading into Week 1, here are key areas to watch as the Texans battle the Bills in what could be a very interesting game.

1. Joe Brady's Inexperience as a Head Coach

One of the biggest things to watch in this game is how the Bills' first-year head coach, Joe Brady, handles the moment in his first game as an NFL head coach. While Brady has been a great offensive coordinator for the Bills over the past two seasons, being a head coach and a coordinator are two very different things.

The reason Brady's inexperience may matter in this game is due to the type of team that the Texans are and how much experience head coach DeMeco Ryans has.

Under Ryans, the Texans have become a consistent contender in the AFC and have built one of the more dominant defenses in the NFL, which the Bills have learned all too well. Additionally, Ryans has been the head coach in Houston since 2023, and in that time he has coached this team to an overall record of 32-19.

So when looking at the coaching matchup between Ryans and Brady, it will be interesting to see if Brady's offense can come out on top or if Ryans' experience and dominant defense lead Houston to a victory and extend the Texans' win streak over the Bills to three games.

2. The Texans Pass Rush

Another key area to watch is the Texans' pass rush against the Bills' offensive line, as last season, Houston dominated this matchup, which was a major reason why they came out victorious over Buffalo.

In the 2025 matchup, the Texans sacked Bills quarterback Josh Allen a total of eight times and had him under heavy pressure for the entire game. With the heavy pressure, Houston also forced Allen into throwing two interceptions and held Allen without a touchdown.

With edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter, the matchup next Sunday should once again be a difficult one for the Bills' offensive line and specifically for offensive tackles Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown.

Heading into the matchup next week, if the Bills once again struggle to block the Texans up front this game could very well play out similar to last year and result in another dominant defensive performance from Houston.

3. Houston's Offensive Changes

The third area to watch is the offensive changes made by the Texans throughout the offseason.

In 2025, the Texans' offense struggled to be productive, and with the defense that Houston has, that is something that must change. So, general manager Nick Caserio made a few changes, including trading for wide receiver Kayshon Boutte and running back David Montgomery, in addition to bringing in Keylan Rutledge, Wyatt Teller, and Braden Smith (currently on IR but could return after Week 4) to give more depth to the offensive line.

With these moves, quarterback C.J. Stroud should be in a much better position to lead a successful offense with better protection and more pass-catchers around him to be able to move the ball and build a lead so the Texans' defense can be more aggressive. Against the Bills in Week 1, it will be interesting to watch how Houston's offense attacks Buffalo's defense and whether it is a balanced attack or if the Texans decide to go run- or pass-heavy.

So as the Texans prepare to face the Bills next week, it will be very intriguing to watch how this revamped offense can perform and if it can be productive enough to give Houston the separation they need to defeat Buffalo and start the season 1-0.
