With the Houston Texans set to battle the Buffalo Bills in the season opener on Sunday, head coach DeMeco Ryans emphasizes the importance of his team starting fast.

The Houston Texans are primed and ready to start the 2026 season as they battle the Buffalo Bills in Week 1. While the Texans are ready to get out there and play, it is critical for this team to make smart decisions and ensure they are very detailed in their approach.

On that note, Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans emphasized the importance of starting fast, particularly in the season opener during Tuesday's media availability.

"This first game of the seasons are always tricky games to prepare for tricky games when it comes to, you know, how the games go. It can go a lot of different ways. But for us, you know, as a team for the past few seasons that I've been here, for us to get off to a really good start, it's going to take us starting fast on offense. We've done well in our season opener, right? We play well on offense. So, it starts there," Ryans said.

"Defense has to do a great job as well of, being the strength, being the backbone of our team, but the offense, if we jump out, we play fast. That'll be the key for us," Ryans added.

As Ryans talked about, getting off to a great start is critical, and being able to come out on top with a win in Week 1 can be a huge momentum boost throughout the early part of the season. Especially in this case against the Bills, as this is a game that could play a part in the postseason standings when January comes around.

Now getting back to what Ryans said, the offense being able to start fast could be huge because it can help this defense play to its strengths which are getting after the quarterback and covering downfield.

All over the roster, the Texans have great players, but on offense, two of the most important players for Houston will be quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receiver Nico Collins.

When Stroud and Collins are on the same page, this offense is very dangerous, and heading into the season opener, if Stroud and Collins are able to connect early on and consistently throughout the game, this Texans offense could have a great outing.

On the defensive side of the ball, Houston lean on their great defensive front that includes edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter in addition to a solid secondary that has cornerbacks Derek Stingley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter as well as a solid collection of safeties with Jalen Pitre, Calen Bullock, and Kamari Ramsey.

Overall, both sides of the ball have their strengths and when put in the right positions they each definitely have the ability to make plays and put this Texans team in a position to potentially start the year 1-0.

Against the Bills on Sunday, it is going to be interesting to watch how Houston is able to affect quarterback Josh Allen, especially after sacking him a total of eight times in the 2025 matchup as well as picking him off twice.

So, heading into Week 1, if the Texans can start fast against the Bills on both sides of the ball that could not only help them to start the season 1-0 but may also put this team in a position to truly compete as one of the best teams in the AFC.
