The Houston Texans fall to 2-5 on the year following a devastating overtime loss to the New York Giants on Sunday afternoon.
The Houston Texans entered Week 7 hoping to improve to 3-4 as they battled the 3-2-1 New York Giants on Sunday afternoon, however, Houston fell just short as New York came out on top with a 27-21 victory in overtime.
When looking at this game, it was definitely up and down for both sides with both offense having solid drives, but also having some plays made by the defense and special teams.
To start, the Texans were able to go on top early as quarterback C.J. Stroud and the offense had a solid drive that was capped off by a 58-yard field goal from kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn, which gave Houston a 3-0 lead.
Shortly after that, the Giants were able to respond as quarterback J.J. McCarthy marched the offense down the field, and then running back Tyrone Tracy Jr. was able to run it in from two yards out to give New York a 7-3 lead. Then the scoring slowed down as there were several punts, as well as a missed field goal by Giants kicker Dominic Zvada.
Following the limited scoring, the Texans cut into the lead as they marched the ball down the field and ended that drive with a 57-yard field goal from Fairbairn to trim the Giants' lead to 7-6.
After that, McCarthy and the offense had another good drive as they moved the ball down the field and got into the red zone as a result of McCarthy connecting with tight end Thomas Fidone II on a 29 yard pass play. Following the explosive play, the Giants opted to bring in quarterback Jameis Winston for and on his second quarterback sneak he punched it in from one yard out to extend the lead to 14-6.
With the Giants now up 14-6, the Texans were looking to respond, and they did just that as Stroud and the offense had an explosive play in the form of a 43-yard reception from wide receiver Tank Dell, who made his return after being out since 2024.
After the big play, Stroud kept moving the ball through the air, and then he threw a six-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., which was his first touchdown catch with the Texans. Following the touchdown, Stroud completed a 2-point conversion to tight end Cade Stover to knot the game at 14-14.
Then on the final drive of the half, the Giants were able to get the ball in field goal range, Zvada missed yet again on a 44-yard field goal attempt which sent the Texans and Giants into the locker room for the halftime break tied at 14.
Coming out of halftime, both offenses stalled as the third quarter was only punts from each team, but at the start of the fourth quarter, the Giants went on a solid drive as they moved the ball all the way down the field, and then it ended with running back Cam Skattebo using his physicality to run through Texans defenders and get into the end zone to put New York up 21-14.
Neither team was able to score on their next possession, but on the Texans final drive of regulation, Stroud and the offense did what they needed to as they marched all the way down the field and to end the drive Stroud threw a three-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Xavier Hutchinson to tie the game at 21-21.
After the Texans tied the game, the Giants were unable to do put any points up, so the game went to overtime with New York and Houston tied at 21.
To start overtime Houston had the ball, but they could not do anything with it, so they had to punt the ball to New York.
After getting the ball back, the Giants were ready to go as Skattebo had yet another big run as he found his way through the Houston defense for a 42-yard run and got down to the Texans' 30 yard line. Then on the very next play, fellow New York running back Devin Singletary found a crease and ended the game as he got into the end zone and gave the Giants a 27-21 victory.
With this loss, head coach DeMeco Ryans and the Texans fall to 2-5 and are in deep trouble when it comes to the playoff race as well as the standings in the AFC South, while the Giants improve to 4-2-1 and are in a great position in the NFC East as well as the overall NFC standings.
After a slow start to the season, the Texans had to win this game to give themselves more room for error down the stretch, but they were not able to get the job done. In this game, the offense, defense, and special teams all played decently, but unfortunately the Giants made more plays when it mattered, which was the difference in this game.
Moving forward, the Texans will not have a lot of room for error if they want to make the postseason, so it will be interesting to see if this team can respond and get back into the AFC playoff race.
