Monday Night Football will begin its double-header tonight with the Houston Texans and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and will feature two of the most exciting quarterbacks in the league, as C.J. Stroud and Baker Mayfield go head-to-head. There’s no shortage of storylines in this contest, as these two teams with playoff aspirations square off.
Let’s break down the three things to watch for.
Mike Evans is one of the most consistent receivers in the NFL, and while he may no longer be in his prime, he’s still capable of completely flipping a game. On any given night, he can post 100 yards and a score. Even with Chris Godwin sidelined with an injury, Evans still has a dangerous running mate in rookie Emeka Egbuka, who opened his season with 67 yards and two touchdowns, including a 30-yard bomb that swung the game in Tampa Bay's win over Atlanta.
In the Week 1 loss to the Los Angeles Rams, the Texans failed to score a touchdown. They moved the ball well enough to reach field goal range but couldn’t break through when it mattered most. Just one touchdown in that game could have changed the outcome, but Houston had to settle for three field goals in a narrow loss. That’s surprising given how explosive this offense has been in past seasons. Tonight’s focus will be on whether Stroud can guide the Texans to their first touchdown of the season — and ideally a few more — to finally complement a defense that has already proven it can hold its own.
Baker Mayfield has always been a quarterback defined by highs and lows. When he’s comfortable, he can pick apart defenses with his arm and extend plays with his legs, making him one of the more dangerous quarterbacks in the league. But when he gets sped up or pressured, he’s been known to give the ball away at a high rate. For Houston, creating turnovers could be the difference between victory and defeat, which is the case in most NFL games, but especially against Mayfield-led teams.
This is a matchup between two teams that truly have the talent to make noise in the postseason. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. CST at NRG Stadium in Houston on ABC, and will be the first of two games on the Monday Night football slate.
