Cincinnati reclaims veteran depth as Houston’s receiving corps thins, snatching Mitchell Tinsley away just as injury woes leave the Texans desperate for proven options on the perimeter.
The Houston Texans just lost some valuable wide receiver depth at a time when the position already has plenty of questions. The Cincinnati Bengals are signing Mitchell Tinsley off Houston's practice squad and adding him to their active roster, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Tinsley originally spent last season with Cincinnati before joining the Texans' practice squad after being released during roster cuts this summer.
While Tinsley wasn't a major part of Houston's plans entering the season, his experience made him a useful piece to have around. He appeared in all 17 games for the Bengals in 2025, making four starts and catching eight passes for 116 yards and two touchdowns. The Texans officially added him to their practice squad on Sept. 1.
Now, Cincinnati is bringing him back because of its own issues at wide receiver, and Houston loses a player who already has NFL experience. The timing isn't ideal for the Texans. Nico Collins has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, and his absence has forced Houston to lean more heavily on the rest of its receiving corps. Collins was officially ruled out for the Week 3 matchup with Indianapolis after not practicing during the week.
The Texans still have players such as Kayshon Boutte, Xavier Hutchinson and Jaylin Noel available, but losing Tinsley removes another experienced option from the organizational depth chart. Tinsley also had the benefit of already having NFL game experience, something that cannot necessarily be said for every player available on Houston's practice squad.
There is another element that makes the move notable. Tinsley knows Cincinnati's offense after spending the entire 2025 season with the Bengals, so Cincinnati clearly viewed him as someone who could step in and contribute quickly. Houston, meanwhile, will have to find another way to replace that depth.
This isn't a move that should dramatically change the Texans' season by itself. Tinsley was a practice squad player for a reason, and Houston's bigger concern remains getting Collins healthy and finding enough consistency from the players filling his role.
Still, losing an experienced receiver off the practice squad is not ideal when the position is already dealing with an injury to its top player. With Collins' status still something to monitor, Houston could have used the extra depth Tinsley provided.
It will be interesting to see if this moves the needle either direction for either of these teams.
