Houston's winless start triggers a leadership reckoning as Ryans takes full accountability for tactical failures, demanding immediate adjustments to save a season sliding toward an early exit.

The Houston Texans are 0-3 to begin the 2026 season, and Head Coach DeMeco Ryans knows the team needs to find answers quickly.

Houston suffered another frustrating loss Sunday, falling 19-17 to the Indianapolis Colts in a game that came down to the final moments. After opening the season with losses to the Buffalo Bills and Cincinnati Bengals, the Texans entered Week 3 needing a win to avoid an early-season hole.

Instead, Houston left Indianapolis still searching for its first victory. Ryans didn't shy away from his role in the team's struggles following the loss, "We're 0-3, obviously I haven't coached good enough. If I coach better, we'll be on the winning side," Ryans said during his postgame press conference.

The Texans have struggled to put together complete performances through the first three weeks. The offense has shown flashes, including C.J. Stroud throwing for 353 yards in the Week 2 loss to Cincinnati, but those performances haven't translated into wins. Houston also had opportunities against Indianapolis but couldn't make enough plays to come away with a victory.

The biggest concern now is how the Texans respond to the difficult start. An 0-3 record puts Houston in a difficult position, particularly for a team that entered the season with expectations of competing for a playoff spot.

There is still plenty of football left to play, but the margin for error is shrinking. Houston needs to turn close losses into wins, and that will require improvement on both sides of the ball. The coaching staff will also need to find ways to put the players in better situations as the Texans attempt to change the direction of their season.

Ryans' comments put the spotlight on the decisions being made on the sideline and during the week. Rather than looking for an excuse following another close loss, the head coach acknowledged that he needs to be better. That starts with preparation, adjustments and finding ways to help the Texans execute when games are on the line.

The Colts game was another example of how small details can determine the outcome. Houston was within striking distance throughout the afternoon, but the Texans couldn't make enough plays to finish the job. At 0-3, those missed opportunities are becoming increasingly costly.

The Texans now have to move forward without allowing the slow start to snowball. Their season isn't over, but the urgency is obvious. A team that expected to contend cannot afford to keep letting winnable games slip away.

Ryans has made it clear that he believes he can do more to help change that. Now, the focus shifts from what was said after the loss to what Houston does with the opportunity to respond. After three straight defeats, the Texans need their first win — and they need to start showing that the lessons from these losses are actually leading to improvement.
