The Houston Texans have been one of the more successful organizations in the NFL over the last three seasons. The franchise has won a playoff game in each of the last three years, but getting over the hump of the Divisional round has been a struggle. The franchise has yet to see an AFC Championship Game, but Houston is looking to change that.
Going further in the postseason is certainly a driving factor in how the front office will approach the 2026 offseason. Some big moves have already been made as the franchise has executed two trades, released running back Joe Mixon, and given out a few extensions. Next on the schedule is free agency, with the draft coming right after that at the end of April.
Houston doesn't have much cash to spend in free agency, but teams around the league manipulate the cap by restructuring contracts to free up space. The Texans just did this with defensive back Jalen Pitre.
The majority of Pitre's salary for the 2026 season has been converted to a signing bonus, which lowers his cap hit for the 2026 season. This frees up some money for the Texans to pursue free agents or acquire bigger contracts via trade. This has something the organization has done in the past with defensive backs, and that trend is now continuing.
Pitre signed a three-year extension with the Texans during the 2025 offseason. The deal was worth a total of $39 million, with most of that money being guaranteed. Houston restructured that deal by converting most of the 2026 salary to a signing bonus and adding two void years on the back end of the deal.
Houston shouldn't be expected to make too large of a splash in free agency, but it is obvious that some moves need to be made in order to get over the hump. The offensive line is going to be a focus, which is something that General Manager Nick Caserio has made clear since the 2025 season ended. The franchise will also be able to upgrade some areas of the roster through the 2026 NFL Draft as the Texans have a good amount of picks near the top of the event.
Houston is on the right track, and some of these moves could set the roster up nicely so that it can compete for a Super Bowl in the near future. The organization is going to continue to make moves, and it will be an interesting team to watch in free agency.
