The former Ohio State teammates reunited in London, sparking a dynamic aerial connection that promises to transform Houston’s offense following a gritty victory over the Jaguars.
The Houston Texans got more than a dramatic win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. They also got their first look at what quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. can accomplish together in the NFL, and the early signs were encouraging.
Houston escaped London with a 34-31 victory over Jacksonville, earning its second consecutive win and giving its offense another talented weapon. Harrison made his Texans debut just days after arriving in a trade from the Arizona Cardinals, reuniting with Stroud for the first time since their days together at Ohio State.
For Stroud, the connection looked familiar, "It felt like old times," Stroud said after the game, expressing his excitement about playing with Harrison again. "I'm proud of him, happy for him. I thought he looked great. We'll get him more touches and more plays here in the season."
Harrison finished with three receptions for 34 yards on four targets, with all three catches moving the chains for Houston. Considering he had only a few practices to learn the Texans' offense, it was a promising introduction to his new team.
The chemistry between the two former Buckeyes was evident throughout the game. Harrison's first reception was a tough 14-yard catch over the middle, and Stroud went right back to him on the next play. Although the Jaguars broke up that pass, the quarterback continued looking for his former college teammate as the game progressed.
Harrison later added two more catches during a third-quarter scoring drive, helping Houston sustain its offensive momentum.
Stroud acknowledged that the connection could have produced even more. He mentioned missing Harrison on a potential touchdown opportunity, suggesting there is still plenty of room for the duo to develop as they become more comfortable together.
That is an encouraging possibility for a Texans offense that already features established receiver Nico Collins and promising young playmakers such as Jaylin Noel. Harrison's arrival gives Stroud another option capable of making contested catches and converting important third downs.
The quarterback delivered an impressive performance against Jacksonville himself, throwing for 312 yards and three touchdowns while completing 70.5% of his passes. Adding Harrison to the mix could make Houston's passing attack even more dangerous as the season continues.
There is still work to do. Harrison acknowledged that he had not learned a significant portion of the playbook before his debut, making his immediate contribution more impressive. With more practice time ahead, the Texans should have opportunities to expand his role and find additional ways to get him involved.
Houston's victory was an important step toward getting its season back on track, but the reunion between Stroud and Harrison might prove just as significant. Their Ohio State connection is already translating to the professional level, and Sunday's performance offered a glimpse of what the Texans could have moving forward.
