Sheldon Rankins returns, anchoring Houston's elite defense. His extension fuels continuity and aims to replicate last season's dominant, playoff-bound performance.

Big-time defensive lineman Sheldon Rankins is back to help lead the defensive line in Houston. This comes after a Mike Garafolo report that the player had signed with the Texans for two more seasons.

The deal is huge because of what it means by way of continuity and player retention. Few teams with a defense as good as the one that Houston fielded in 2025 are able to retain as many key contributors as the Texans have early in this offseason. It's looking more and more likely that Houston could be just as good if not better on the defensive side in 2026.

Jobe Morrison of The Big Lead discussed why the Texans brought the big-time player back to Houston. Morrison wrote the following of Rankins' career to date and what he brings to the team.

"Reports indicate the Texans have signed Sheldon Rankins to a two-year extension that includes $12 million in new guarantees.

Houston fielded the NFL’s best defense last season, and that unit helped keep a struggling offense afloat on the way to a postseason appearance.

Rankins played a major role in that success. During the Texans’ wild-card matchup against the Pittsburgh Steelers, he scooped up a fumble and returned it for a touchdown, extending Houston’s lead and effectively putting the game out of reach.

The extension also continues Rankins’ second stint with the Texans. The former 2016 first-round pick previously played on Houston’s 2023 squad, which also delivered a dominant wild-card performance."

$12 million in guaranteed money is nothing to turn one's nose up at, especially given that Rankins is 10 years into a career playing defensive tackle. But Rankins is valuable to the Texans, and the move certainly is indicative of the fact.

Defense was everything to the Texans in their 2025 breakout, and likely will be everything to their 2026 sustained success. The team certainly values quarterback C.J. Stroud and what the offense brings. The addition of Detroit running back David Montgomery through trade stands to help the team's 2026 prospects. But the team will go as the defense does. Given all the signings that the team has made this offseason on the defensive end, they should be in good hands.

The Texans are set up to compete for, if not win, the AFC South division next season. They will look to put together the missing pieces as free agency progresses this month.
